JUDGING AT ORCHIDEXPO

Find out how ribbons and trophies are awarded at Orchidexpo!!!

Orchidexpo judging

All exhibited orchids are judged on Saturday morning according to a rigorous procedure:

​1. Each plant is registered in its own class, for example:

  • classe 23: Cattleya species

  • classe 34: Multifloral Paphiopedilum, sub-genus Polyantha

  • classe 64a: Phalaenopsis hybrids, white without markings

 

The best orchids of each class win a green ribbon with a 1st, 2nd or 3rd mention.

2. The 123 classes are grouped into nine categories up to 23 classes each, for example:

  • the Cattleya alliance : 19 classes

  • the Phalaenopsis : 18 classes

  • the Vanda alliance : 12 classes

 

The best orchid of each category wins a trophy and a rosette.

3. Among the best plants of each category, the judges select:

  • the best plant of the show,

  • the best species plant,

  • the best specimen plant,

  • the best miniature plant.

Each award is accompanied by a trophy and a rosette.

A single plant can win several of these awards.

Artistic exhibits

Orchid exhibits are also judged. There are 7 classes:

  • 4 amateur exhibit classes
    (1-5, 6-15, 16-25 and more than 25 plants)

  • vendors exhibits

  • orchid society exhibits

  • educational exhibits

 

The bests of each class win a green ribbon with a 1st, 2nd or 3rd mention.

The best amateur display, best vendor display, best orchid society display, and best educational display each win a trophy and a rosette.

The President's Trophy is then awarded to the best display of the exhibition, all categories combined.

Educational exhibits

Educational displays aim to familiarize visitors with various aspects of the wonderful world of orchids, such as:

  • in vitro propagation of orchids,

  • agricultural production of vanilla,

  • the geographical distribution of Phalaenopsis species,

  • the history of the first naturalists and taxonomists who established the foundations of orchidology, etc.

Parfum orchidée

Fragrance judging

Perfumery experts judge the class of fragrant orchids.

Only the quality of their fragrance is considered.

The best orchids in this class are awarded a green ribbon with a 1st, 2nd or 3rd mention.

The best fragrance wins a trophy and a rosette.

Judging artistic works

The art division includes 15 classes including drawings, paintings, watercolors, photography, ceramics, jewelry, needlepoint, tapestries, and other items created by amateurs and professionals.

There is also a class for children's works.

The best of each class wins a green ribbon with a 1st, 2nd or 3rd mention.

The best photography wins a trophy and a rosette.

The best in the art category wins a trophy and a rosette.

  • Best Cattleya plant

  • Best Cymbidium plant

  • Best Cypripedioideae plant

  • Best Dendrobium plant

  • Best Oncidium plant

  • Best Pleurothallides plant

  • Best Vanda plant

  • Best plant other alliances

  • Best amateur exhibit

  • Best vendor exhibit

  • Best orchid society exhibit

Tribute trophies, named in honor of personalities who have marked the history of the Société des Orchidophiles de Montréal, are awarded to the most beautiful plants of the show:

Bulletin AOS

AOS Judging

On Saturday afternoon, a panel of judges accredited by the AOS (American Orchid Society) will select the most beautiful plants and award prizes for flowering and culture to the most deserving according to strict criteria established by the AOS.

Exhibits may also be judged and awarded by the AOS.
